If you want it simple , follow my advice.

Internal filter versus external , would suggest the external but that advice will greatly increase cost . But its not rocket science to wash out the filter a few times a year.

You are advising a filter incorporated within a pump, far from simple. More so when the original poster doesn't need a filter

I'm sorry wallbash but your advice doesn't hold water, if you can tell me why the op needs any form of filter I will discuss, otherwise stick to something you know about.

If op follows the recommendations, (not mine) but those advised for simple pond construction, then they won't go far wrong.

Simply by using a small pump to run water through a small waterfall and a bed of water plants, they have constructed the best filter possible, a vegetative filter,
the plants that thrive on fish crap and release nutrients back into the water are the filter elements

And for wallbash's benefit the reason that many enthusiast's (remember I'm included here), have to use fancy filter systems is simple again, we want to house more fish of a larger size than a given volume of water can support, the op does'nt have this issue, simply wanting a wildlife pond not an artificial environment, which is in essence what we are trying to create
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

    Try answering the OP questions.

Keep it simple , keep it cheap ......... make it work .
    My way works

Question , do you actually have a pond ??

"The 2nd point is consider safety, small children and ponds are not a great combination, even if you don't have any there may be a time when there are children in the garden."

Too true, even if you lock your gate and maintain fences the blighters get in. I had to fill my pond in. :(

Yes I do thanks. Child and pet proof, even I can walk across it, massive filter system too, but for reasons that the OP doesn't need to worry about.

    Answer the OPs question??,

    A quote from the opening post by the OP;

"As it's not (hopefully) going to have anything living in it, will it need a pump or filter or something to keep the water fresh?

I did, and unlike you I gave the correct answer considering the op doesn't need the added cost or maintenance of a filter system.

Plus the fact that the type of thing you are suggesting simply does not work, as anyone who actually knows anything about keeping fish will tell you.

Keep it simple??, you give that advice and then advice using a filter.

Just take on board the safety aspect, the rest is pretty easy, and don't forget pondlife forum, a better place to ask than here.;);)
