Moving Entourage Emails to Macmail on an iMac

I am helping a friend who is currently using Entourage for email on a Mac. The emails have been filed under about fifteen different headings. She now has an ipad and has been advised to move to Macmail to be able to deal better with emails on both machines. She wants to maintain the existing structure in Entourage in Macmail.

Can anybody point me to a guide for how to do this transfer please? I've looked at various forums and am thoroughly confused. There seem to be particular problems transferring the list of email addresses and being sure that all the filed emails are there.

Entourage is old (v10.1.6) and the Mac is running Snow Leopard.

I suspect that the "MacMail" is a slight red herring. It sounds like she has the mail stored in mailboxes on the Mac, and needs to move the mail to a cloud service somewhere so it can be accessed from the Mac and the iPad, while retaining all the past mail.

Does the mail service that she's using support IMAP and multiple IMAP mailboxes? If so, it's really easy: just create a set of mailboxes on the server and copy the mail (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/272325). Gmail supports it, for example.

Thank you and sorry to be so slow replying. She has an openworld.com email address so I'll see if it supports IMAP and use the link you have given to try to set it up.

    Thanks again.
