Granny Annexe attached to house... Insurance?

We have built a separately accessed granny annexe, which is attached to the existing property.

Should I insure as one property (as it is still one building), or should we insure separately (as Mum's annexe has it's own front door, which is accessed from external steps).

There is no connecting door.

Alternatively, should the whole building be insured, with the contents insured separately?

Thanks all

    Buildings Insurance as one property.

For Contents Insurance, as there is not a connecting door, Mum can arrange her own cover, but she will need to advise Insurers of nature of the accommodation. (self contained annexe to another property) If she does not have much in terms of overall value, perhaps she should try Age Concern. It is probably also possible to include your Mums contents on the your families Contents Insurance, but do check for the value of her possessions and inform your Insurers of the annexe accommodation. What you don't want to find out, is that your Mum has some high value jewellery you did not know about and when you come to claim, you are under-insured.

When I asked my insurance company that question they said they would not insure it as one property. If they are self-contained with separate entrances then they require separate insurance.
    They advised landlord insurance.
