Granny Annexe attached to house... Insurance?

Hi all
We have built a separately accessed granny annexe, which is attached to our existing property.
Should I insure as one property (as it is still one building), or should we insure separately (as Mum's annexe has it's own front door, which is accessed from external steps).
There is no connecting door.
Alternatively, should the whole building be insured, with the contents insured separately?
Thanks all!
