Using Whatsapp to send photos from Spain to England

hi there someone was trying to send me photos from Spain. We both downloaded Whatsapp for this reason. However the photos only appeared on my phone after he had arrived back in the UK. We were texting each other and phoning with no problems. Does anyone have an idea of what we might have done wrong? thanks for any help

Sounds as if they did not have Data Roaming enabled.

WhatsApp won't work to send text or pics if data roaming was not enabled. Was he able to send you texts only using WhatsApp? Or were they SMS texts?

I'll check the data roaming - thanks. I think I've said so much to him about switching data off and only using wifi that he probably didn't have it switched on. Will it still be free with data roaming switched on? Will it not work in a wifi area? Will try next time he goes abroad. thanks

No, data roaming costs money. Just WiFi would work with my Blackberry. Don't know about other phones.

Sending over wifi is free ,no need for expensive data roaming when abroad
You will only receive if you have wifi enabled on your phone or have data roaming on

Have you tried Viber ,similar to Whatsapp

Dependent on the network and location, the costs for data can be reasonable. Which network does your friend use here?
