Windows and doors

Afternoon peeps - am after a little bit of advice, hubby and I have decided to replace all our windows and doors (not particularly moneysaving now but will save us money long term as it blows a gale through them at the moment!!).

We currently have wooden windows and are going to get them all changed to UPVC. We only have a small house so all together its only 4 windows and 2 doors, one being the front and one the back into our lean-to conservatory type thing. The biggest window is prob about 1m deep and 2.5m wide while the other 3 are all round 1m deep and 1.5m wide.

Does anyone have any ballpark figures we might be looking at to replace all these? We just want something secure that looks okay and will help us keep heating costs down in the future rather than practically chucking money out of the windows on our gas bill!

Thanks in advance

    Hi Jm

I would hazard a guess from my experience (up north prices) 4 windows at that size approx £1500 doors can be anywhere from £400-£800. Again these are approx you probably get basic bottom range stuff for cheaper or get a national company in and spent thousands!!

    Hope this helps

The thing to remember about window quotes are the following.
The more openers the more money (increased material costs).
The more individual panes the more money (increased time to manufacture and extra materials) however this presumably is something you will have to live with for a while so deliberate carefully which is more important.
Have a look at similarly styled houses for idea's, a good firm is one that will explain the reasons behind their pricing rather than just give you a price.
Top tips are ask people you know if they have had work done and their views.
    Always get three quotes
Anyone who starts at a really high price and then drops it down massively will probably try to get you to sign up there and then, dont do this. Always think about it carefully when you are on your own.
Do not do 'cash deals' you have no legal protection and firms that do these are notorious for going bust and then restarting again giving you no legal protection. prices vary from region to region, where I am we charge around 100 quid per window and 125 quid per door for fitting, let me know the sizes and style in the following format and ill let you know what you should look at paying
style formats are width, height then style so a lounge window would be for example 1800 x 1200 side hung opener/ fixed/ side hung opener.
I charge less for a top hung opener than side hung as the hinges cost less and most firms I know do the same.
I would also have to know the height of the internal cill from the floor and which are upstairs bedroom windows and whether any should be obscure glass.
Remember when designing, windows that side hungs can only be around 700wide and 1300 high, top hung 1200wide and 1000 high.
    any other questions please ask.

i would say based on some simple yet practical styles, between 2500 and 3000 fitted
  • we recently renewd 6 windows and 2 doorsets. Windows and doors cost for supply only was £1800 + VAT with fitting costing £70 each

find a local builder/glaxer rather than an outfit with sales reps

cheapo doors are £400 but no good for security as you can kick the panels in
    good ones are £600 - £1200 each

we got 6 windows - big ones done for £1200

local big DG firm wanted £4k for the same job

if you get a firm that offer one price then drop to another its a scam
they work on your greed to get a good deal

find a firm with a fixed price & a good reputation, ask your friends and avoid the big names on the TV
