Avast update - PC working overtime?

Updated to the latest Avast free a couple of days ago.

Immediately after the update PC appeared to slow and the avast icon was spinning quite a bit suggesting it was doing something in the background.

Since then my PC seems to be working harder, fan constantly going. With just Firefox and avast running CPU usage is up around 90%+

Something called plugin-container.exe seems to be the culprit.

Have run malwarebytes (quickscan) it didn't pick anything up.

Any ideas?

I'd give the Avast forum a look.

A quick google of plugin-container.exe suggests it is something to do with Firefox.

try ie instead, or remove some plugins, plugin container (part of firefox) often goes off the rails, check the ram usage if it's an old machine

Have you got Firefox set to reopen tabs from the last session when you start up?

If so it's easy to bring up a long list of open tabs and it may be one of the tabs you have open is using a lot of CPU. Try closing all the tabs and seeing if it goes away.

I prefer FF and have few plug ins, but will try disabling each in turn.

It is a few years old, running XP SP3, but does have 2.5GB of RAM and usually runs sweet as a nut.

    Not sure.

How can I check and or disable?

As you have all pointed out looks as those it is a FF link.

Currently using 2-4%CPU, following reboot from last night, and plugin-container isn't on the task usage stats yet.
