No, it won't. The ISP is clearly fine (look at the connection speed downstairs) and the problem is the wireless connection to the laptop.

My thoughts exactly. I'm more than happy with speeds of 6-8 Mb/s. The problem is the room I use the laptop in. Strange thing is, I get 6-7 Mb/s in the front bedroom but less that 1 Mb/s in the rear bedroom (where I have a 'den'. I used this room as an office when I worked and now I'm retired, I use it as my hideaway).

closed, yes the laptop is wireless. Thanks for the links. My laptop is Windows 8 and two of your links don't seem to include Windows 8.

I did find this with a Google search but was put off by the fact that there is no pairing button on my TT router. Would it pair automaticlly without the need of a pairing button?

Yes, manual configuration is straightforward and explained in the supplied instructions. This is how I configured mine.:)

I have read some of the reviews and it seems like my answer.

Go for the home plugs, they're superb.

I live in a listed building with walls that are 4 foot thick. I use Devolo DLAN 500 plugs, I have BT Infinity and get full speed upstairs in my study.

I connected the upstairs Devolo plug to a wireless router so I do have wireless if needed.

Home plugs have improved so much in recent years, they used to be rather hit and miss and speeds weren't always great but the new ones are superb. They are plug and play and I find them 100% reliable and you can either get WiFi built in to the plug or simply add a wireless router.

I've got full speed coverage all over a house where even the internal walls are 4 foot thick something I struggled with a few years ago and there's no need to run CAT5 ethernet cable everywhere!

Thank you Mr_Toad. Where do I start and are these (expensive) overkill for my needs?

You don't need 500meg (burst speed, not continuous speed) unless you're doing lots of file sharing across your network. 200meg devices would be fine. (You only have 7meg internet anyway, so super speed LAN won't give any benefit). See also the TPLink range - they tend to be better value for money (according to reviews - I have no personal experience).

I agree with Bod, don't forget that I have fibre BB and am getting 74meg download and 22meg upload speeds hence the 500s

Prior to the Infinity upgrade I had a set of 200s which are a lot cheaper but they only gave me a 19meg download in the office.

A word of caution though. There are many manufacturers of these devices, some are good and some are bad. I borrowed a set of eBay cheapies from a friend and though they were supposed to be high speed they didn't come near to the Devolos for speed and they were prone to dropping the connection periodically too.

Another cheap set I borrowed were better but caused interference with TV and Radio, My TV is internet connected for iPlayer etc.

Having tried the cheaper ones I went for the more expensive branded set and have been 100% happy.

The people I borrowed the cheaper ones from were also happy but they weren't pushing them to the limit as they didn't have really fast BB. As you're only getting 7meg you would probably find the cheaper ones perfectly good too.
