Car Hire in Auckland

Does anyone have any tips for getting a good deal on car hire for 3 weeks in Auckland.
I was simply planning to get a couple of online quotes and then try and play them off each other.
Anybody got a better plan?

When are you going?
We went around June time in 2004 and with it being the winter car hire was so cheap I don't know if they would have given you the time of day if you tried to haggle! I think it worked out about £10 a day for a 4door car with 2 drivers (not compact, not estate, can't think of a comparable car...). I can't remember what company it was I'm afraid.
But getting a few quotes sounds like the best idea. If you're going in the summer it may be a whole different ball game!0 -
Here are some sites I used when I was in NZ last year:
http://www.webcarhire.com/car-hire-newzealand.htm
http://www.britsontour.co.nz/
http://www.apexrentals.co.nz/600_home.html
http://www.drivenow.co.nz/;jsessionid=bCBzJe4c7ma5?jsessionid=bCBzJe4c7ma5&countryCode=NZ&vehicleCategory=C
http://www.nationalcar.co.nz/
From memory I think I used National in the end.
I would also agree that it depends when you are going. I was there in April/May last year and the rates dropped significantly as soon as Easter was over, since that really marks the beginning of Autumn/Winter rates for many companies.
The rates we still in 'holiday' mode when I booked a car on the north island, but I picked up a brochure in the Auckland tourist office and got a very good deal on a south island camper van for a couple of weeks later.0 -

Have you booked anything else out there?
You may get a cheaper rate if booked in conjunction with your accommodation?Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?
