Backpacker Travel Insurance

Options
Hi All,

Hope everyone is well on this wonderful spring day (raining!)...

I've spent most, actually all of today trying to find a suitable 'backpacker' travel insurance policy that covers the following:

- Cancellation of £3000pp
- Covers Trekking of over 4000m
- Covers Skydiving
- At least £5m medical cover & repatriation
- Pre-medical condition (my wife has back pain, from a small car accident last year, that doesn't affect day to day living and she is waiting to see a consultant)

It is extremely difficult to say the least (without spending £2184, actual quote!)

I have found Direct Travel, however, they only cover £2000 cancellation per person. Am I able to buy a basic travel insurance that covers cancellation, alongside this Direct Travel one? If I do, do I need to put the trip duration down as the full 6/7 months in order to get the cancellation cover for our trip, even though the cancellation cover would effectively stop when our trip starts?

Any thoughts/advice/recommended insurers very much appreciated

Insurance is a nightmare!

Were you to claim for cancellation then the insurer would require details of the trip (in writing), and discover your policy didn't actually cover the trip, and have grounds to reject your claim.

    Thanks, that's what I thought.

I guess I better keep looking for a backpacker policy with an increased cancellation cover, or risk it and go with the insufficient cancellation cover from Direct Travel...

Columbus do backpacker insurance. They have an online quote system where you put in your details and get an online quote. If you sign up with a dummy account you can play about with the various options to see what comes up.

Has anyone used Columbus backpacker insurance before? I'm going on a RTW trip for at least a year and they seem to be the best bet so far.

You may be able to cover the sky-diving (provided it is in Europe) on a one-off basis through PJ Hayman adventures (assuming you don't intend to do it several times) - this could reduce other quotes that you find quite considerably.

have you had a look at STA travel's website (as they are a specialist travel agent that deal with a lot of round world/backpacking trips. I got a good deal with them for insurance, (not sure what price they are now, as i went around 9 years ago) good thing was they were able to tailor it for our needs. take a look at http://www.statravel.co.uk looks like you can get an online quote.
