Are American citizens entitled to use our NHs or do they have to be covered by personal insurance on holiday

    They get free accident/emergency treatment. (Everyone does, irrespective of which country they come from).

    But they have to pay if they then get referred (To an outpatient clinic) or admitted to hospital.

    And they would have to pay for their own medi-evacuation if needed.

    So they need insurance.

    There is no reciprocal agreement with the USA and therefore anything other than A&E, infectious disease and compulsory psychiatric is chargeable.

    Some might point out that the NHS treats first and looks for payment second. Historically they have always been very poor at recovering monies and so some tourists just skip out on the bill but inevitably if they do become critically ill then they are going to be stuck here until they are fit to travel by standard means whereas with medical insurance you may be medi-vaced home once you are stable enough
