How do I delete names from my iPad2 contacts folder?

I got a shock today when I found I had 609 contacts in my iPad2 folder. Only about 20 are relevant. I am not sure how they got there. can some one please tell me how I can delete them. Thank you so much for any advice and how do I stop them getting into my contacts folder?
