what am i doing wrong re cd writer?

its probably something really stupid im doing. ive just taken a usb cd/dvd rewriter from another comp and stuck it on the laptop, its recognised, all drivers are ok but when i put a blank disc into it it says drive not accessible incorrect function. So i thought maybe it was only a reader not a writer (i use other comps for doing my cds) but according to the front of it it is? it says dvd multi recorder and cd rewriteable. what am i doing wrong?

edit-its def a rewriter i just checked on the net.

its working! brilliant! im using ashampoo full version to burn the cd (im used to roxio normally) and tested it in normal cd drive and it plays...the trouble i had with roxio a few times was the disc would only play in the comp it was burned in (even though i selected for use on all computers)..this ashampoo thing doesnt give you any options and i havent got another working computer to test it in. its also a LOT quicker than roxio...didnt say anything about preparing/formatting though? is anyone familiar with ashampoo, i want to make sure it has worked ok before i send it

edit: as the drive isnt mine i need to buy one. whats the absolute HIGH street cheapest i can get a usb cd/dvd rewriter thats compatible with an ibm t23 thinkpad-ta.

It sounds as if you were using Roxio Direct CD(the equivalent of Nero's InCD), not the CD burning utility. Discs using this application need to be formatted.

    If you're using Windows 98SE, you'll need; http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/tg/detail/offer-listing/-/B000ANXQ4E/new

For 2000 and XP, you can use most external DVD writers.

thinkpad t23 running windows xp, 128 ram (still havent got round to getting more!) so, does ashampoo automatically format then? it just started writing to the disc then spat the disc out when it had finished, no 'use it with other computers' dialogue or anything like that, i cant test it on the other comp as its still not working, but it works in mine.

It's fine. You were simply using the wrong recording medium beforehand.

You are now using the standard method.

That's a slow 'write' speed. Are you are using CD-RW discs?

just a normal cd-r, not rw, its just photos i want to send someone. i wanted to be sure as i dont want to do a load of discs then find out the person cant play them at their end!
