Any Tree Surgeons out there??

Hope I have put this in the right section!

I have a couple of MONSTER Leylandii trees that need either topping a lot or taking down, I would estimate they are about 60-70ft. Can anyone give me a rough idea of the cost for this?
I live in Hertfordshire, I assume prices down here would differ from further north?
I have looked on the internet but can't find any info on costs. Just want a ballpark figure before I start calling round!

Thanks in advance, I'll post this in DIY too!

I paid £300 about 3 years ago for 2 large Leylandii, but very easy access (they were on the road frontage), and we're in a cheap bit of Kent.

I'm sure you'll get some better advise in soon :D

£200 for a very large (35ft) leylandii up here in cheaper than chips derbys.

65 ft really?, that 3 x house high, I'm doubting that to be honest;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

  • I had what I consider a fairly large conifer taken down for £200. It was about 32 feet high and broad at the bottom. Although it looked huge, even from a distance, it was gone in a morning as if it had never been there (apart from a lovely stump left to grow a climbing rose on).

Take the highest point of your roof as being maximum 30 feet for 2 storeys. It's a prodigious tree if it's more than twice that, best to leave the guesstimate to the tree surgeon if you ask for a quote over the phone :eek:

That's about right by my reckoning Tony, I was quoted the same £200 figure for a conifer in my garden, and that was dwarfing the neighbouring homes, I est 35 ft.

The reason I said that was cheap was because I was quoted almost twice that by others, it seemed the guy that was cheapest had a farm, and all the shredding and chipping went for cattle bedding;);)

Thanks for the replies, just wanted a ballpark figure as a starting point.

Believe me these are HUGE trees and very wide too, thankfully at the bottom of a large garden but they are casting a lot of shade over not only our garden but that of the neighbours. I honestly could say if not twice the height of the house they are almost 3 times as they can be seen from a long distance, we joke they should have red flashing lights on top for low flying aircraft!! I didn't think trees could grow that high!

Just wanted a rough idea on price so when we get quotes we'll be a bit more clued up, obviously will get a few quotes, also will have to look up registered tree surgeons as this will be a big job, we have a lot of flat bed trucks driving round here knocking on peoples doors asking if they want their trees chopped down, we really do need someone with insurance and the right skills as if something did go wrong I wouldn't want these monsters landing in the neighbours gardens!

I bet I can see them from my house. I think you are doing the right thing whatever the final quote(s). Trees of this size aren't going to get any better with age are they. And with the weather getting more extreme there's always the danger of them coming down in a less controlled manner than you are suggesting.

Unfortunately our ballpark figures probably have little relevance here, you are talking about a quite different approach when you get to this height. I agree with you whoever you get in needs to be fully insured. Sounds like you could take out half of a postcode nevermind next door if something went askew.

    Good luck.

Ok, slightly edging the original question but here is another.

This 65ft high tree falls and demolishes your house, your insurance pays:T:T:T

The other scenario, it falls the other way and demolishes the next 2 houses down the road, who pays?, you may be in for a surprise.;);)
