Hiya sorry bout your situation, i wondered if you considered a work agency i always found if you go in willing to work and always turn up they will snap you up. For me it ended in a management job and any job is better than none at all as its easier to get a job when you already have one. Good luck i hope you find employment soon.

Can you not get a job as a care worker too? They always lookin for staff.

I think because your a couple you should be able to claim wtc give them a ring.

The OPs partner cannot claim WTC as she is under 25 and not working the min of 30 hours..

Funnily enough I asked my girlfriend to ask and get me an application form today when she goes in (this is her second day on the job!) so fingers crossed. If not I'm just going to apply for all the care jobs in the area. Never a line of employment I'd considered before, but if it's good enough for my GF then it's good enough for me.

It's most probably not your dream job but at least it would help with your finances until a more appropiate job comes along, as you are over 25 you should be able to put in a claim for WTC as long as you can get enough hours....good luck.

Thanks for all the advice. Yeah we generally don't choose brand name food and I've changed our electricity and gas tariff two months ago so that's sorted. Pets cost a bit because we've got 7 snakes, 1 cat and several tarantulas (spiders don't cost that much to feed though!) from when I was working and bringing in a fair chunk.

Sadly at the mo, looks like the only thing to do is to pull in the purse strings more, ask family for help and if possible move from our flat to a houseshare or something because I don't know if we're going to be able to keep it.

Best case scenario I get a job (hate being unemployed) VERY soonish I guess! Thanks again for the info, if anyone has any more advice, please, please by all means let me know.

I will probably get flamed for suggesting this... but could you sell a snake or two? I understand that some can fetch a fair whack depending on breed, colour etc.

BTW if you suggested that I sell one of my pets I would tell you to go to hell :p. So it is a just a suggestion.

Haha I appreciate the suggestion but no, they're our family. I'd literally go without food before they had to. :)

Be careful the snake doesn't feed itself to the spider - or the other way around!

Places like Macdonalds are always looking for workers. My daughter got a job locally even though they weren't advertising, she contacted them online. and 3 days later she had a job.4 nine hour shifts a week could earn you about £6-700 per month, plus a meal every day. they wanted her to work 5 days initially. Not the most exciting job in the world and hard work, but since starting there she has gained an internship and has another interview in 2 weeks for an office based job. It seems you will always find it easier to find a job when you are in work!

My nephew got a job as a care assistant for disabled adults which was just about the only job he could find after many months of extensive searching.

He loved the work and as he has a very severely disabled younger brother, he was outstanding at the job.

In a very short time he became assistant manager at the care home, on a good wage and all while still in his 20s.
  • Rent = £420
    Gas/Electricity = £118
    Phone/BB = £25
    Water = £50
Council Tax (now we have to pay it!) = £100+
Food and Pet Food = Prob about £200+ a month for both of us

I think you're spending a lot more than you need to. Ok rent you can't do anything about (unless you are really struggling then find somewhere cheaper) Gas & electricity seems quite a lot I live in a 4 bedroom house and I only spend £100 a month and there are 4 of us. Water could you not go on a meter (I only pay £45) Food £200 a month??? I spend less than that for 4 of us a month. So there are a lot of ways to cut down your spending.

I can't give any advice but I can't see why they have the rule that you have to be over 25 and work 30+ hours to get tax credits.

Surely the people who are getting less hours need more support?
