methods (in my order of preference)
1 Network (needs a network connection in each PC and a crossover cable £8)
2 USB transfer needs a USB transfer cable and a program £30)
3 USB digotal media adapter (allows you to plu in a 512Mb compact flash card into a PC and fill with data then download to other PC) method of choice if you have a Gb or so as it only costs £25 and can be used as a backup device later

I assume that the old PC doesn't have a cd writer

I can give more details of each if you want

I would agree with the above post; the cheapest way would be if both computers have an Ethernet LAN port (integrated into most computers nowadays) then you could just get a cheap network cable and link the two together and transfer that way. Should only cost a couple of quid.

The no-cost way is to whip the old drive out of the PC and install it as a slave to the new PC - remember to set the jumpers on the old drive. This assumes you don't mind opening the case, using a screwdriver and having a quick look at the relevant manual. You do have the manuals for old PC, don't you? ;)

Just in case your old PC is really old and you don't fancy opening either PC up, a free (although very slow) method is to ZIP all your files, set up a new email account for yourself with your ISP and email them all to yourself (you'll have to check that the size of the files doesn't exceed the size of the your Inbox). Don't set up your email program to download emails for the new account yet.

When you've set up your new PC, tell your email program to check for mail on all your email accounts, including your new one, and it will download all your files. Simply unZIP them and put them where you want on your hard drive.

This will take a long time if you have a lot of files, but it is free and doesn't involve tinkering with any hardware.

As you have MP3's, If you have the likes of an Ipod or a 20GB Zen Touch, you can use that to transfer onto and off of. :)

If you decide to use an ipod or other mp3 player you should transfer the files to it using windows explorer if possible (or otherwise the supplied program) this ensures it is easy to get them back off it. The reason I say this is that if you transfer mp3s to an Ipod using iTunes then the filenames get changed amongst other things and it is harder to get them off (although there is software to do this).

Have to say...that's what I did, and it was no problem at all. Just ensure all written data is verified before scrapping / overwriting the old drive.
