You were a bit too swift for me. I usually try to guide people through if they are novices. I would not have expected you to do it alone.
The link in post #16 was just for information. I was then going to go through to find the specific manual, which I did. But your other half's fingers were too nifty for me.
Anyway, I hope he can put it back together. As least now he knows how easy it should have been. How would have completed it in minutes had he known. Did he actually break anything?

Arrh well at least we gave it a try, however as he tried to pull it apart the keyboard fell out and the bit around it buckled and bent  So if it was repairable once it certainly ain't now. We had already assumed it to be deceased so I guess being able to get the hard drive out atlast is a bonus.
Have been looking at laptops again and many don't have hdmi. If we want to connect to our 3yr old Sony bravia how would we, thanks0 -

I'm quite sure that the HP can be fixed. The only problem is perhaps not by yourself as easily. Doesn't sound terminal to me. If it isn't broken it can be put together. By the sounds of it, nothing is actually broken. He just took it apart a bit too much.
Most modern laptops do have an HDMI output, so don't buy one without that function.
I'm wasting away here. Need to go out to get some shopping.0 -

Hope you got the shopping. If you saw the HP I don'tthink you would be so sure that it could be saved, but will take it to a repair shop and see what they say.
So many laptops don't have hdmi but will only look for ones that do.
It has been suggested that we look at Scan computers. Has anyone dealt with them recently ? Back in the 80s and 90s I used to order from them on behalf of my ex as he would build his own computers. I wasn't allowed to touch/use them and became a technophobe, hence my lack of confidence and need for support when thiings go wrong or the unexpected happens.
I have read some horror stories about Sony customer service and its putting us off a bit. Still in need of suggestions for a new laptop. Tanks0 -
dont go with the sony, my dad had a world of problems with it and the driver support aint so good. IMO.
dunno whether samsung is better for laptops though.
and Apple are heavily overpriced and cannot be repaired or upgraded easily, remaining very expensive throughout their lifecycle.
For £1600 you could get a pretty awesome XPS from Dell (waiting for someone to slate Dell next).
Every brand has their horror stories of course...Friendly greeting!0 -
OK I'm dubious to post this after the hard drive removal woes above, but for the benefit of others, even though it's been said before:
DO NOT buy upgraded RAM from Apple.
When you're customising your computer, and there are different RAM options, it is WAY overpriced. Same goes for the HDD/SSD.
This does apply to the 'fat' MacBook Pros with the DVD drives, but NOT the Retina ones as they have the RAM built into the motherboard and it can't be upgraded.0 -

Why reluctant to post? The OP is more than capable of these tasks, as long as they have a guide.
Nevertheless, I don't think they will be paying those ridiculous prices anyway.0 -
They only need to put it together again. But firstly, get your data off the hard drive with that enclosure. Have you ordered it yet?
Then you can give it all to them with the hard drive(we will delete any data that you deem sensitive beforehand) and ask them to put the whole thing together again.
Get a full and exact quote for the job before they begin and then check with us here before they begin.
As for your new laptop... The amount that you pay for a laptop does not correlate with the amount of time that it's stays working fully.
Look at manufacturer/distributor extended warranties. Toshiba have reasonably priced extended warranties. Some Samsung laptops have a five year warranty.
Some ACER laptops can be paired with an inexpensive ACER Advantage three year warranty that includes accidental damage, for as little as £30.
Will send you a PM.0 -
Hi, thanks for all the input and help last week. Finally oh decided it had to be a mac and is looking forward to setting it all up and getting to know it.
I now need a little advice on the acer one ao725. I want something that weighs less than most laptops and a 11.6 screen will be fine to work on. My original budget was 200 but could stretch to 260 for this at John Lewis and get a 2yr warranty. Any ideas anyone? Would like hdmi connection which this has.0
