Domain hosting website suggestions for dormant URL

Options
Hi all,
Just over a year ago I purchased a domain name which I intend to use for a website I want to create. However I am not currently at the stage to do this and the renewal fee has gone up since last year considerably.

Has anyone please got any suggestions for any hosting websites which maybe less expensive than my current renewal fee, at present I want it just to keep hold of the URL so wouldn't need any extra or added features than this.

Thankyou for your help,

TURRELL1

Just move your domain(s) to a domain registrar like 123-reg.co.uk who don't require you to buy a hosting package too. Will cost you £3.49 a year for a .co.uk domain and about a tenner for most other top level domains. Then cancel your hosting package with your current provider. Make sure you can cancel it right now. Otherwise wait until it's due for renewal.

I am not sure who your current provider is but I think some still make an 'admin' charge to transfer out so be careful that it won't end up costing you more than you thought.

Was it your current registrar that bumped their fee's up, or have you received something through the posts? It would be unusual for a registrar to increase their fee's by any great amount, was your first year a special offer price?

With regards to letters through the post, some registrars will spam this way making it look like they're your own registrar but are actually a different company that will charge you a fortune to transfer into them.

Make sure this increase is legit 1st! :)

Thank you for all your advice, godaddy and 1&1 seem to be good options for changing registrars. However what is the process for transferring?

Do I need to contact my current registrar first or if I tranfer will the new registrar sort the admin side of things out on my behalf?

Also I've just been invoiced but my current term doesn't finish for another month yet when do I need to or should I transfer?

    thank you once again

Normally you will have to 'unlock' the domain in the control panel of your current registrar, this protects you from unauthorised changes and transfers.

Then you would sign up with your chosen new registrar (I recommend http://www.123-reg.co.uk/ ) and then on sign-up choose to transfer your domain name across to them.

I would advise you to transfer as soon as you can, to avoid being charged for another year with your current registrar before your term is up. Then, your next year will be with your new registrar.

Just don't end up with a company like Britishnic - when I wanted to transfer my domain out, due to their renewal price hikes, the simply did not reply to any request at all. I had to prise the domain from them via a special Nominet procedure.
