Sorry if this is not the right place to post this but wasn't sure...

I've got a new car coming shortly but couldn't find one suitable with a built in sat nav so having to get myself a tom tom or something. However, I really REALLY don't like the idea of suckers on the windscreen and wires everywhere, so I was just wondering is there any way of mounting a regular sat nav to the dashboard and really REALLY hiding the cable?

My wife's got a new car (a Seat Mii) and the sat nav mount is built into the dash and the charger and everything is done through that and it's brilliant.

  • You need a bean bag type of mounting that sits on the dashboard.

We have one for our tomtom - makes it really easy to transfer between cars.

You'll still have the cable going from the satnav to the cigarette lighter though.

Here's a link to the type of bag you need.

    Velcro pads also an option.

Put it down in the right hand corner of the dash/screen and tuck the wires into the A pillar.

You could stick one of these discs to the dashboard.

A Sat Nav Mat works well. I use one in US as you cannot easily and lawfully mount a Sat nav on the front screen in California. This is the type of thing.

If you Google you can probably find equivalent cheaper. Good luck.

If you follow their rules, you shouldn't have a problem. I have been stopped by the police in California with a sat nav stuck to the screen and it wasn't an issue.
    (12) A portable Global Positioning System (GPS), which may be mounted in a seven-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield farthest removed from the driver or in a five-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield nearest to the driver and outside of an airbag deployment zone, if the system is used only for door-to-door navigation while the motor vehicle is being operated.

I usually leave mine down below the centre console, in a cubby hole in front of the gear lever.

If I want to look at it slightly more often, maybe the layout of this car is a helpful coincidence as I put it resting in the right hand side of the actual instrument panel, hiding only part of the tachometer above 4250 rpm (which never happens in this diesel) and the repeater lamps for headline dip and main beam, which I'm either not using or can tell anyway when it's dark.

Depending how much you're use the sat nav, may be worth going to https://www.proclipusa.com and investing in a semi-permanent mount for the sat nav and the car.

You'll need two bits one of which is car specific and where you want the sat nav mounted, and other bit is specific to the sat nav. It costs a bit though, about £70-ish for both bits.

It will come from the USA, but they give you a Fed Ex tracking number, and often arrives in a couple of working days.

    What about a vent mount?

I use one for my Nexus tablet, using the vent on the left of centre with the vent turned off is just fine.

Just make sure whatever mount you use doesn't a: draw attention and b: invalidate any warrenties

I did not say you couldn't mount on windscreen. Just that, in my opinion, the laws on where you may mount are restrictive. Additionally, knowing what jobs worth the CHP can be, it is not worth taking the chance. Also, using the mat you can place it where it suits you and not the law. Additionally, you do not leave a tell tale ring on the glass suggesting a Sat Nav may be on board for light fingered Sam.
