Faulty Laptop

Can anyone advise whether I have any rights regarding a laptop purchased for a Christmas present (2011) After 16 months it developed a fault which the repair shop diagnosed as needing a new motherboard costing almost as much as the computer.
I have looked online at consumer rights and CAB have said that
'If it was bought fairly recently, for example within the last two years I may be entitled to a free repair, replacement or refund from the trader I bought it from. I have approached The Argos shop on ebay where it was purchased and they have said that as it is out of warranty any repairs are down to me. I have also approached the MSI Computer(UK) Ltd. who have said that as Argos has taken over all warranty aspects including post-warranty repairs I should contact them directly with any issues I am experiencing. Help! This laptop should have lasted a little bit longer than 16 months
