in Credit cards
Hi all,
I'm looking to get myself a computer but I would like to pay it off around £100 a month, looking to spend £1000. I currently have a Halifax standard MasterCard, with a credit limit if £2,250. I haven't used the card since nov 2011 and the balance is zero. I would like to get a card with 0% for a minimum of 12 months give or take so I can pay it off monthly. Is there any 0% on purchases card that anyone could recommend? Also I'm not sure what to do with regards to my current CC. Do I close it? Will leaving it open affect me applying for another CC elsewhere? I would assume because technically I have access to those funds it would be taken into account when applying for a new card?
Many thanks.

I doubt having the other card will make any difference. It's always useful to have one, or a spare, just in case you need it to book a hotel abroad or anything like that.
You need to look at your credit worthiness before deciding which one to apply e.g. if you've missed a payment in the last 6 years and don't have a high income then the top pick might not be the best for you - just an example. Have a look at the cards in the link and work out which one suits your circumstances.0 -
Thanks for the reply. I've always paid my CC on time, I've never missed a payment on anything and cleared the balance on my current card. Another thing I forgot to mention is that I recently moved house back in Jan, will this have any bearing?0

Your time at current address will affect how you are scored by the lender.
Don't close the Halifax card. It will help to improve your credit profile by having this and another card as it increases the data on your report.0 -
Thanks, would it be better to until I've lived here 6 months at least?0

Possibly, possibly not (as other factors will also influence). Are you on the electoral roll and have you checked your credit report to ensure it is showng?
How long have you been in your job and what is your salary?0 -
Thanks, I believe I am but I've not checked. Been in my current job for 3 years 3 months, around £1430 a month after tax.0

Keeping the Halifax open won't affect a decision on another card (as your salary is around £25k/year). You'd only need to worry if you had other loans or available credit in the £16-20k region. Being in your job for that long is a very positive factor and you will be scored well on that accordingly.
Definitely check whether you are on the electoral roll before applying as that would appear to be the biggest stumbling block.0 -
Many thanks for the advice. I've always been in a steady job, I will find out if I'm on the electoral roll, I believe my current card is the Halifax clarity.0

What are you looking at for £1k? If you are upgrading you can buy a box for a lot less. If needing to buy whole thing lts of good stuff available under £1k. Go over to the techie board for advice?
