where do I stand

can someone tell me where I stand on this issue?
bought a load of components to build a computer at the beginning of the year
it was all working fine until about 2 weeks ago when it started making a right racket and was vibrating like hell
took it apart too try and track down the issue
turns out it was the fan on the graphics card, if you stopped the fan the noise and vibration would stop
as soon as you let the fan go again it would come back
so got in touch with the company I got the bits from, and they said send it back
posted it at a cost to me (£5.65) they got it and tested it and said there was no problem so I couldnt have a replacement
told them that I didnt believe that, they said they cleaned the fan and tested it but there was no problem with it
replied back to them saying that I'd have the card back and just have to put up with it being broken
2 days later, they send me a message saying I need to get in touch with the returns department to get it back
but as there was no fault on it I would have to pay a testing and returns fee of £20 + vat
the card was only £35 in the first place!!
in total I would have paid just short of £30 for them to mess me about, and then I'll still have to pay for another card
I'm thinking of telling them to keep the card and to cut my losses and buy a new one from another another company
I'm I ok doing that??
can they just take the money from the card that I paid with if I refuse to pay??

This is one of the problems when buying computer componants, this practice has been going on for years, and it is outrageous that it is still allowed to happen.
Problem with computer parts is that it is always difficult to prove blame if a part is faulty, they love to blame it on the person who did the installing.
All these type of companies take an age to test something, and I never dealt with a company that sends it back FOC.
Sometimes, it is better to pay alittle more and buy from a local store.0 -
yes it basically my word against theirs
can I just refuse to pay tho and right it off tho?0 -
You would need to check the terms and conditions of the RCA they gave you to be ale to return the item.
Officially they have provided you with a service which you should have to pay for.0 -
they never offered me any T&C
I originally got in touch with them to say that it was making a noise and vibrating, they never offered any support, they just sent a RMA number and said send it back
after doing some digging they have this
"it may be established that there was no defect in the goods at the point of delivery to you, we reserve the right to charge you £10 as a contribution towards the cost of inspecting and testing the goods"
nice of them to let me know before hand!!
also the fact that they then want to charge me another £10+vat to return it is taking the mickey a bit, seeing as I could buy a brand new one from the and get it delivered for £4.99!!0 -
As far as they are concerened you sent them a perfectly good card with nothing wrong with it. They would new be out of pocket for your mistake so will charge you.
I had a similar problem with overclockers regarding a motherboard that was faulty but took a little time for the fault to occur. They tested it without doing as I asked to give the fault time to occur, charged my card 20 odd quid as they kept the details on record and sent back the faulty motherboard. needless to say the fault was still present so they lost my business, and I used to spend a lot of money with them, both business and pleasure.0
