Help! Travel insurance expired whilst abroad - who can insure me?!

Hi all
My partner has moved to UAE with her work and I'll be moving out with her. I came out with her at the beginning of April and will be out here for another month or two before going back to the UK, but will eventually move out with her permanently.
I have a First Direct bank account and pay for the First Directory, which includes travel insurance. However, the travel insurance only lasts for 30 days away from the UK, after which it lapses until I return to the UK and go out again.
I was initially going to only stay for the first month, but have decided to stay longer, but as such my travel insurance has now expired. I'm not concerned about baggage, etc, but I'm worried that if I had any medical or legal problems I'm not covered.
I've phoned STA travel to ask advice on my situation and if I can get insured, but they said they can only insure before you leave the UK so can't help, but if I return to the UK I can then take out insurance. Going back to the UK just to renew travel insurance is a very expensive way of doing it (around £500 return!) so is there any way I can get insurance now I am abroad?! Surely it's not that complicated!
I looked for quotes on the normal insurance comparison sites but can't see anything in clauses about having to have a date of travel before it can commence, but when I've bought travel insurance in the past they tend to only refer to schedules that you only get when you actually take out the policy (or pester constantly until they give them to you!)
Any ideas what I need to do?!
Thanks!

The bad news is that if your original trip was planned for more than the 30 days First Direct provided then any claims in the 30 days would not have been covered.
You can get cover whilst abroad from https://www.worldnomads.com0 -
either extend your existing one, buy locally or try http://www.worldnomads.com/0

SNAP !!! :rotfl:All matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.0

Thanks guys. They look very expensive, but still cheaper than going back to the OK!
I had a return booked for 28 days after flying out, but it was flexible and I later decided to change it.0 -
https://www.worldwideinsure.com is a similar one. There is another one, but teh name escapes me. I seem to remember it had "Global" in the name and yet World First also rings a bell.0
