Natwest - Debit Card Payments/Pending

Hi,

I recently attempted (Friday 15/05/13) to make a payment to a local company with my debit card over the telephone. They attempted this payment twice and on both occasions told me the payment method had been declined.

There was sufficient money in the account.

When i checked my natwest online banking my balance had been reduced by the amount i wished to pay twice, so i'm now out of pocket.

I've spoken to the company manager who advised they had issues with the payment system they use and no money has been received.

Natwest have told me the payment has been authorized and gave a authorisation code but said the payment is still pending?

Payments i made on the same card on the same day show up on my online statement , however these payment does not.

Will the money be credited back to my account after a certain period of time?

If the payments appear on my statement what are my rights if the company in question continue to say they haven't received the money?

If somebody could offer me any advice that would be appreciated!

Why are you out of pocket? nothing has debited. A auth is just that. It may or may not debit.
It can sit there for a max of 14 days.

If the company say they have not got the funds then odds on the auths will drop off.

The payments are most likely in reserve, and usually will drop back onto your available balance after 7 days or so.

If it is a major issue for you, ask the company to contact your bank confirming they wont attempt to complete the transaction and your bank may be able to remove the reserve early.

The money has been taken out of my account twice, quite a substantial amount may i add and has not been returned yet, hense being ''out of pocket''

    Thanks for the explanation ;)

When did you make the payment? May 15th was yesterday and Friday is tomorrow. Was it on Friday last week (May 10th)?

The bank is right, it is only your 'available balance' that got reduced, the actual transaction has not been charged yet, but 'earmarked' (reserved) twice. If the monies are not claimed, the reserve will drop-off after about 5-7 working days. If you made the payment last week Friday, it should come off tomorrow or Monday.

If you cannot wait that long (as the wrongly earmarked sum is not available for you to spend) you must contact the merchant, as they can cancel the duplicate authorisation.
