I have a wooden stair handrail which I would like to paint a silver metallic. Someone suggested using Car spray paint after undercoating it?? Has anyone ever tried this, or can they suggest another type of paint. Thanks

the "conventional" way - check out Ardenbrite base coat and their metallic paint and glaze. Ardenbrite is pretty much the painters number one metallic paint product. Cant say I have silverised a handrail myself, but the primer is good for wood, so with a thorough degrease and sanding, you should get good adhesion from the primer for the metal paint. Apply their clear glaze over the silver paint when dry, with probably 2 coats for that situation.
re - car body spray lacquer. My colleague uses one particular brand on furniture over Otex primer. I will find out which brand. What you may find though with an aerosol is it is tricky getting the even finish, and it may prove easier and better result going the route of painting by brush
Edit: - Rotherham Refinishing Supplies will accurately match any paint colour in an aerosol lacquer finish, but I suppose Halfords would be simplest if you go that route for metal silver finish. It is no fun getting part way through the decorating and you don't know the next step.0
