i would first write asking for a breakdown of how this overpayment came about, admin error on their part yes i would agree that the DWP should wipe the £20 and call it a lesson learned, if they prove you made a error resulting in £20 over payment then honour it up and call it a lesson learned.

the DWP can claw back money as far back as they wish to.

if they agree to wipe it off you record then get it in writing and keep hold of it because if they claw it back in a benefits claim or your pension then produce the letter and ask them to put it back with a rather cheezy grin on your face.

I did ask them for proof of over payment on the phone when I got the first letter and they said all they could see on the system was that there was an over payment of £20 made in 2003, they couldn't be any more specific as that was all it said on the system, no dates. This is not about them writing off the 'debt' it's about a matter of principle. They are chasing me for money because the computer say's I owe it, yet at the begining of 2009 when it came to me requiring some records from them, they had destroyed them, these record would have included invoices from the college, now in the real world, companies have to keep invoices for 7 years (I believe) so one rule for them, another for the rest of us.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world
