Hotels in Amsterdam

Can anybody recommend a good hotel in Amsterdam, budget or mid-range would do quite well and near the Amsterdam Centraal station would be a bonus. Looking for something quiet as last time, I made a horrible choice, so input would be appreciated!

I've stayed in the Botel twice and it's good if you don't expect too much (you probably wont be in it much anyway). It's in a perfect position as you can see it the second you exit Centraal Station and can easily pop back to change or pick something up from any central city location.

The Avenue and The Luxer are both good and close to central station. The Avenue has an american style breakfast. The Luxer is close to the red light area, but no problem with that at all. I prefer the Luxer because of its atmosphere. Rooms in Amsterdam hotels are invariably small.

rembrandt is nice. so too is the hotel rho - just off dam square. also stayed on a canalboat - booked last minute got a great deal - can't emember site though
