Driving Wifes Car 3rd party only

Hi Folks

Scenario as follows

1) wifes car got warning light on dash - needs to go to garage for checking - car is insured Fully Comp with only her name on policy.

2) i have my own car again fully insured which allows me to drive any other car on a THIRD PARTY ONLY basis

3) question is wife cant get time off tomoz. with her permission would i legally be entitled to drive her car to the garage. just worried ill get stopped by police, not that id draw attention as im the worlds slowest driver lol

4) any advice appreciated

Tom

  • If you have third party insurance cover and the owner's consent then you are fine to drive it.

Just don't wreck the car on the way to the garage or you'll be paying for it yourself :)

Read your DOC cover carefully, some will quote "not owned by you" and the odd few quote "not owned by you or your spouse".

Unless either of you have appallingly bad driving records or are very young having each other named on the policies would normally bring the price down.

Look into adding yourself to your spouse's policy, many Insurers will actually reduce the premium if you add a partner otherwise it's often very little extra.

You will then have the same cover as your wife on her car when you drive

Just another thought. Has the garage said the car is ok to drive with this warning light on?
