Just to update - I called the director of the company and explained that I felt it extremely insulting for them to try and barter me down after offering me a set wage and that I wouldn't be joining the organisation.

The director literally sounded like they were crying. I was begged to reconsider and they apologised about the £7ph thing. Apparently the director that offered me the £7ph didn't know a wage had already been agreed and they were trying to give me some work I could do to earn some money whilst I wait for a CRB to be completed with them. It's sounds pretty fair and considerate when you view it like this, although that is not what I took for the initial 2 hour meeting.

I've gone in to see them all this morning, and been very clear that I expect the wage originally offered and at any point they don't pay me or mess me around, I have other job offers I will be taking. I'm certainly not financially worried about resigning should I need to.

They have asked me to basically re-launch their company with them and basically get them out of the mess their in now.

In the meantime, the other much lower wage job I was offered have sent me a contract and rota of hours totally different to agreed (includes weekends/lates etc- I was very clean I wanted 9-5 Monday to Friday and this apparently wasn't an issue!).

I contact the manager there who said he had made a mistake and those were the hours. I haven't fully declined the job... Yet.

So I going with the better paid one as both are now much less overall than I expected, so I may as well take the one that'll help me build up my CV a bit more in the right sector.

I can't believe how these companies operate in truth

Hopefully I'll gain something more than just an entry on my CV and help get the original company off the ground. I'm not scared of a Challenge.

To be fair it sounds like you know what you're doing and have your head screwed on right. Only advice I could possibly offer (which I'm sure you will do anyway) is to keep your wits about you. Too many employers out there try to take a mile the second you give an inch. Happened to me in my old job! One minute you are plodding along quite nicely monday to friday with an understanding of what your job entails, a day comes where you kindly agree to help out on a sunday where they are short-staffed and suddenly 9 months later you realise you haven't had a weekend off since, are on your feet 60 hours a week and are doing the work of a manager for minimum wage!
