Windows Live fails to import all messages

I am frustrated with Windows Live mail as I backed up all my latest Outlook Express files dating back to 2002 from my old PC to a portable drive. I then imported all the files over to Widows Live. My sent items show up to only 2008, and my inbox only show up to Feb of this year. I tried again but the same happens. Huge chunk of mails missing. They are defiantly backed up from as recent as yesterday. Can anyone help throw some light or suggest a better email service than Windows Live like Outlook Express 6 ?
Why oh why did Windows 7 not stay with Outlook Express. It was a simple, good email program.

Maybe your backup file was corrupted?
Maybe there was another backup file for the missing period and it didn't get copied?0
