After the purchase - solicitor files

I sold and bought in December and thought that was pretty much the end of it all. I just noticed on another thread a poster had said that it's a good idea to get the file from the solicitor as it would belong to me. The last contact I had from the solicitor said that they would retain it for a period of time. And then destroy it I guess.

So should I request if? Is that what normally happens?

Thanks in advance.

I've never heard of anyone doing this before.

Do you mean the file with the deeds to your new house etc? When we bought our house our solicitor informed us we had 14 days to collect the paperwork, which involved the deeds to the house, original paperwork from searches & anything else to do with the house. If we didn't collect in that time frame, the file would go into storage & we would be charged to get them released.
Don't think they would actually destroy them.
