Is it possible bank has sold may data and is it legal?

I joined a credit union bank last month, shortly after landing a job after over a year of unemployment, I have debt, I'm aware of the situation but was very little that could be done when even nominal payments were too much. Suffice to say collectors were persistent. But things should turn around if this becomes a permanent role. happy face
I filled out an application form when I joined the bank and this was the one and only place I gave a work number too, specifically my supervisors direct number to his desk phone which only his clients and contacts know of, this was ok with him. They wanted to check up on my work status. Otherwise I manage my own workload with my own mobile.
The account was not set up in time for my first months wage but was set up all the same so has not been used at all. Today my supervisor received 3 phone call's at his desk from a debt collection agency asking for me. They would not tell me who they got my details from.
I contacted the credit union who told me they don't do anything like passing on data, but they would say that wouldn't they. I can think of no other way the debt agency got this number. Do banks do this?
The bank then accused my employer of passing on private details about me which is utter rubbish, this is a really good company to work for. My supervisor was lost for words at the accusation by them.
1 vauge possibility is that after adding my company name to linked in, with a bit of investigating they may have managed to get through to the customer care line of my workplace and transfared to me via him. Is this the kind of tactics used, nothing like this ever happened anywhere before to me.
There is no other logical way they could have this number.
I want to get to the bottom of this, find out of where they got my number from and above all make sure it doesn't happen again but no idea what to do?

Of course the credit union have passed your contact details onto the debt collectors, if it is them you owe the money too.
By why have they done this after one month? Did you not contact them and explain that it had not been set up in time?
Or manually transfer the funds over.
Or have I totally misunderstood your post?Never ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0 -
They probably updated your credit file when you joined them0

Is the union a creditor?
This has nothing to do with you credit report. They don't lost occupation and telephone number and employment info0 -
Thank you
To clarify the credit union are not a creditor of mine, this is a very new bank account not even 1 month old. No transactions have been made with this bank in or out. I owe this bank nothing.
The agency that contacted me at work wanted to speak to me in regards to a credit card used over 2 years ago.
They contacted me using a number I have only ever given to the credit union specifically for them to contact my supervisor to check my work status, this was a question asked on the application form.Could it have been added to Hunter
What is Hunter? Don't think I have heard of this.0 -

A database financial companies eg banks, debt collectors and insurers etc etc use to find addresses etc.

I guess it is possible but how weird that that number would be associated with me on something like these 2 links unless it was the bank themselves that put it there. No other credit agency would have any reason to have ever linked this number to me.0
