Cancelled Direct Debit & another was raised

Hi,
Last year I bought some insurance and the only way to get it at the price I was quoted was to setup a Direct Debit (DD) with the company and let them take the full amount out.
Once they took the money, I cancelled the DD soon after via my bank and informed the inssurers by phone & letter.
I have just found the insurance commpany has raised another DD on my bank account and took the renewal amount last Friday.
I phoned the insurers and they weren't bothered. Will be going to the bank tomorrow.
But where do I stand, because as far as I'm concern I cancelled the DD? I've heard of chargeback, but having read about it, it only applies to credit/debit cards. Is it down to my bank to sort it out, as I didn't give permission for a new DD to be raised?
Where do I go from here, as I need my £250 back ASP?
Thanks in advance.

Google "Direct Debit Guarantee" you can claim your money back the same day although the bank may try and fob you off0

There are 2 separate things here.
1 You cancelled the direct debit so you can get your money back from the bank under an indemnity claim.
2 However if you did not formally cancel the policy I bet you gave them permission to renew - now they could charge a cancellation fee to cancel.0 -

As I've said, I informed the issuers by phone and letter that I didn't want to renew.0 -

No. You said you cancelled the DD confirmed by phone and letter.
Did you inform them that you did not want to renew the policy?Last year I bought some insurance and the only way to get it at the price I was

OP checked in at 8.41 this morning and we must assume that as he has not posted further that he did in fact not cancel the policy before renewal.
I cannot think of any other conclusion.0 -

You shouldn't assume anything! Actually yes I did checked in at 8.41am to read other posts quickly before going to the bank.
It turns out that it was a debit card transaction and not a diret debit. The bank advised me talking to the insurers before getting them to start a chargeback. Phoned the insurers, got a different person and she confirmed that I did cancelled the policy AND DD last year before the renewal! So I am getting a full refund!
The reason I haven't posted anything is I'm just back in.
In future I suggest you keep your cheeky comments to yourself!
To the rest of the peple who have commented, thank you:)0
