Negotiating direct with vendor

Good or bad thing to try?
We live next door to a house we're considering buying. The vendor showed us around. It strikes me that if the vendor and I could sit down one afternoon and work a price out between us, it could be a lot quicker than going through the agent.
Is this something people do? Or is it not a done thing to suggest? I don't want to upset anyone, it just seems more efficient and leaves no space for the agent to play either of us around.
Should add, we don't really know the vendor. She works long hours so I don't see her often but she's never annoyed us as a neighbour and I'm not aware that we've annoyed her.

I can't see what would be in it for the vendor, she would most likely still have to pay the estate agents fees. They would argue that you only knew the house was for sale because of their for sale sign and therefore they deserve the fee.

I don't think she could avoid their fee as we booked the viewing through them (perhaps we shouldn't have but I wasn't sure she would like a direct approach). It was the vendor who showed us around. I thought it would save all involved time rather than money.0 -
I would do it through ea but tell them if vendor wants to talk to you they canHave a Bsc Hons open degree from the Open University 2015 :j:D:eek::T0

.
Vendor has a contract with the EA.
Sometimes an intermediary party is a good thing through the process.0
