help DIY people....fire surround??

Im trying to remove a fire surround which is fitted in my house by the previous owners. It is a Louis style thing, looks like resin, but attempts have indicated plaster. My question is how is it fastened to the wall?? I don't really want to take a big hammer to it because of the mess, so how can I remove it without resorting to this.....thanks to anyone who replies.

Try taking a hammer and bolster down the back edge, its possibly been taped and filled around there to the wall giving a flush look, other than that if there are no visible fixing points its possibly been glued onto the wall.
