Trouble with TP-Link WR841N router

Hi all, hoping someone can advise!
I recently bought the above wi-fi router (modem-free version for cable connection) as I simply couldn't connect my new nook e-reader to my old one (which usually required a static IP for a sound connection to very modern kit).
Though there appears to be no problem there (although I haven't used the wifi much for an e-reader), BUT: I can establish connections to the 2 laptops in the house, but the quality of connection is terrible - constant drop-outs, heavily restricted bandwidth throughput (e.g. i was getting 0.24Mbps, even after a couple of full unplug-replug resets - yet switching back to my old router, I was instantly back to my usual 19.9Mbps)...
I've tried having a fiddle with the router settings but nothing obvious is viable.
My wifi card in the main laptop is a Dell draft-N 1505 mini card (I'll check exactly later if its relevant).
The router is broadcasting on mixed bgn mode, channel 6.
An extra point: when i ran through the wifi set-up (supplied CD), I found it had actually turned off my wifi card on the laptop - a clue perhaps? Obv I turned it back on...
Can anyone help / advise?
Thanks in advance
Dan

Does it have updated firmware available on the tp-link site? When we had connection problems with a load of 4G units, a firmware update was available which sorted everything out in about 10 minutes0
