Only you can decide if 2% difference is worth £250 to you.

If you want to compare the cover levels and star ratings you could have a look here

In fairness to brokers, which I have to admit that I very rarely am, some of the more traditional brokers do actually add value and may be worth paying a premium for and so it isnt purely looking at the insurer satisfaction rating.

When looking at Defaqto be sure that you are looking at the right product as Aviva have about 7 different ones listed and some brokers may have special terms in which case it wont actually be one of the 7.

I work at an insurance broker, we had an attempted break in of the garage with Aviva approx. 6 years ago - they were fine, appointed Homeserve to deal, paid £60xs they paid the rest - no probs.

Last year at renewal Aviva decided the % of our flat roof on the extension exceeded their acceptance level, paced it out for sq ft, AXA accepted for a better premium, before I jumped ship willy nilly I asked another client of mine who had their home insurance with AXA through us, and had a large claim (falling candle, which had been blown out but must have been smouldering - major fire claim) what the experience had been like, they said they were delighted, interim payments along the way as work was done.

I changed our insurance to AXA, safe in the knowledge that I have the experience to deal and control a claim, and also understand the policy wording.

Many people now buy online, they do not have the clout of a broker behind them, so claims are dealt with, but not quickly, as it is all email and paper shuffling -unfortunately in this day and age, paper shuffling satisfies FSA/FCA criteria/audits so long as you do it within xx days.

The quickest and best claims I deal with are, here's the bill, it's covered under ZZZZ section of the policy, deduct £xxx excess, send us a cheque for £xxx. By doing the searching and thinking for claims depts., claims can be settled within a working week.
