What could be causing my internet connection problem?

I'm just wondering if anybody has any ideas about a problem I've been having
Up until early March everything was fine
Then one day I found I had some intermittent connection problems
These are typically
In IE9 - IE cannot display the web page - usually a refresh loads the page ok
In Safari on my iPad - blank page saying not connected to server. I can browse other sites at this point, and come back to the original site and try again, then it loads ok
On both IE9 and Safari sometimes pictures don't load - I get the red cross in IE and the blue question mark in Safari.
On both IE9 and Safari, sometimes a basic text only version of the web page loads
On my laptop I read my email via IE9, on my iPad, sometimes when I try to view my email I get a message saying not connected to the server.
With all these problems I just have another go and it'll work, but the problem can happen every few minutes sometimes.
These problems persisted for a week, and then all was fine again.
Then a few weeks later it happened again, and lasted for about three weeks, then it was all fine again.
It's been perfect for three weeks, and now this morning it's happened again.
Bearing in mind it happens on both my laptop and my iPad, and I've made no adjustments to anything, I don't think I'm causing the problem.
But has anybody got any pointers as to what is causing a problem like I've described?

I left AOL when TT took over.
Brilliant connection with AOL. One of the few it seemed. Down once or twice in about 6 years. Then it trasnferred to the TT service i lost connection often.
They told me my fastest speed would be 0.5mb despite being connected at the time at 3+mb. I said check the connection now 3mb yes.
They then went on to say i had the wrogn coloured wires for the router.
They worked fine for 6 years. I left and went to O2. Which has now gone to SKY eeek.
And connection issues again. Even though the letter only arrived a few days ago.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
