Our home phone is never used, either for incoming or outgoing calls. The only calls we ever get are junk calls. However if I unplug the phone line then our internet goes off. Is it okay if I just leave the phone off the hook so nobody can call?

EDIT: Nevermind, I tried unplugging the phone again, this time the internet still works with the phone unplugged so I suppose it can simply stay unplugged

you can disconnect just the phone. leave the phone off the hook and you will soon find out why that's not a good idea.

    It's quite loud and annoying!
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Save saynoto0870.com in your favorites, and stop giving companies more £££ dialling 0870 numbers when you can dial freephones or cheaper alternatives.:j

    Why?

Unplug the phone jack from the ADSL filter.
You don't need a phone plugged in to make your broadband work-you just need your router connected. You can also remove the filter if you wish.

I've never heard that one in the UK -- maybe from a Virgin Media line?

On a BT line it sounds like this
