refund problem

Hi all,

On Saturday, I went to Morrisons and purchased 3 items - 2 different items and some oven cleaner (yes, my life is that exciting, LOL!). Anyway, I got home, and one of the lightbulbs was wrong - although it was in a bayonet cap box, it was actually a screw bulb.

Slightly annoyed though accepting that these things happen, I toddled back off to the supermarket for a refund - there wasn't another in stock and I wasn't desperate, so I just wanted my money back. The woman on customer services, for starters, wanted to give me cash back, although I paid on my debit card. It was quite clear she wasn't happy about me wanting the money to go back on my card, and asked me more than once "can I just give you the cash?". Now when I worked in retail, I was always told very strongly by my bosses that refunds should be dealt with in the same format that the goods were paid for in the first place. This was my first issue, but that was perhaps a minor quibble.

The big issue is she refunded me the wrong amount. The lightbulb was £3 something pence, and last night I switched handbags and found the receipt and she put £1 back on my card. OK, so it's only a small amount of money, but that's not the point really. The possible problem is, the assistant kept my original receipt.

I appreciate I was wrong in not checking before I left the store. But do you think I have a leg to stand on getting the rest of my money back? Hope all you lovely people can give me some advice!

Thanks

Of course you are right to demand a refund. I would have been annoyed if I was in the same position.

I would suggest that you should go back to the store and explain what happened. It's also a good idea to take your bank statement with you in case they deny serving you.

After all the song and dance that went on over card or cash, you would have thought the OP would have checked the receipt prior to leaving the shop.

    I know, Hintza, I'm a plonker. I can't believe I didn't, I'm usually so good at checking receipts.

Handsome90 - good thinking about the bank statement - I'll get a printout later and take it in. Should I bypass customer service and go straight for a manager (if one can be found...) or should (in theory) anyone be able to help me?

Why wouldn't you just take the cash? You'll end up spending it anyway.

I agree with mattyprice. I'm not sure that you can insist on the money going back onto your card though. I was always under the impression that stores only had to refund to a card if it was a credi card transaction as technically the CC company had paid them not you. A debit card comes from your bank account and so they can refund you how they like.
