Whats the response rate to applications these days?

My daughter was lucky to get an interview with Primark (after numerous other applications as others have said). She went for the interview and was told she would hear in a couple of weeks. She phoned 2 weeks later speaking to the manager to interviewed her and they said letters should be getting sent out. She phoned again 2 weeks later looking for a response. She was told there was a backlog and should hear again in 2 weeks. Well that's the longest 2 weeks in history she went for the interview last August and still hasn't heard!0

I would put my money on a conservative estimate of 50% get back to you, even if 'sorry unsuccessful'. Don't read too much into some negative nellies on here.
No, DO read into the negative responses, it IS that bad out there.
Response rate for me is around 5% at an optimistic guess. Most of those are just acknowledgements of application or 'unsuccessful, will keep cv on file'. Getting called for an interview is a once in a blue moon occasion.(only 3 so far this year)0 -
Hmm, if what has been posted is true I'm gonna be stuck in this hell a long time and according to the local paper each month the amount signing on keeps growing.0

Well an update, it seems that you guys are actually right, response rate is very low, I applied for 10 jobs over the past 3-4 weeks which might seem low if you're based in a city like London etc but for out in the sticks is pretty good.
I got 1 response from Reed Unfortunately in this instance your application has not been successful. so it seems this is going to be a mighty task.0 -
I guess it would depend on your CV and the jobs that your applying for.
When i was looking for a job i rarely heard back from any that i applied too, not even unsuccessful messages. maybe 1 in 100. and only had 1 interview in about a year of looking
So i aactually paid a CV company to update my CV and Cover Letters, then the resposes started to increases and i started to get alot of interviews until i eventually managed to find a job.
my main problem was i was looking for my first full time job in the industry i was looking at, which made it more difficult0 -
To put a positive slant on it I applied for jobs at the start of last year, and looking back there were 21 applications, had replies back from over 3/4 of them, both positive and negative. Had 4 interviews and got two of the jobs, one short term and one long term which I have now.
I guess it depends on the area you are in, the trade you have and how in need your qualification/experience is.
So not all doom and gloom although I do realise how hard it is to get a job and my experience may not be how the majority of people find job-hunting, just wanted to say there is hope.0 -

Well I suppose we'd like to think we are an exception to the norm but the short and narrow of it is, unless you have something that makes you different or stand out from the crowd its not gonna happen. It is damn hard out there, I thought I might of had a decent enough chance getting in with my fathers firm, he's worked their 20+ years, for 1 job over 100 applicants, I didn't even get to the interview stage.0
