Does fixed rate transfer if you move house?
My Scottish Power capped rate is ending on 31st May. My house is just going on the market and I wondered if anyone can tell me if I would be allowed to take whatever new deal I get when I move house (I'm likely to be staying in the same town). It may be many months before that happens and don't want to end up with cancellation fees or be deemed to be in breach of contract or anything - help!

Thanks lemontart - so does that mean I'd incur cancellation fees if I move house? If so, I might be best going onto Scottish Power's standard rate until the house is sold...SPC Member #112 :A Save £2k in 2014 # 160 :money:0

Hi MissE001
Scottish Power allowed me to carry my existing tariff over to the new address, however I had to wait till they took over the supply at the new property before it continued (my switchover took about 5 weeks so for the period inbetween I recieved a small bill from NPower)
Things you need to take into consideration are as follows:
- If you have a Duel Fuel contract at the current address and say the new property only has electric will taking the existing tariff still be beneficial? All electric properties tend to have Eco 7 metering which throws up entirely different unit rates.
- If the new property has prepayment meters then any Duel Tariff can't be fufilled at the new address unless these meters are taken out (there might also be a charge for removing these meters)
Most importantly, if you take a new contract at the existing address that has cancellation fees and you move to a new property then decide not to carry the tariff over, you'll not incur cancellation fees. The contract only relates to the address you took it out in, carrying it over is an option you have and a good one at that especially if it's still cheaper than anything else available in the marketplace.0 -
Moving home is about the only Get-Out-of-Jail-Free clause there is so far as fixed term utility contracts are concerned.
Even if your supplier is also the provider to your new house, when you move, you are on a new contract and whatever restrictions/charges that were applied to your old house are null & void
Be aware that even though the supplier to your new dwelling may be the same one as at your old address, at the new address they will treat you as a 'new' account and default you to their 'Standard' tariff ie most Expensive tariff0 -
