Laminate Worktops

Options
In process of sorting out what to get for new kitchen. We can't really stretch to granite Worktops but have seen some high definition lamite Worktops that look quite good. Ideally want something with a textured finish that is both matt and shiny within it. Have tried a few of the well known stores re this but there seems to only be a very limited range of colours about, was thinking of a medium grey coloured mixture.

Looking for a bit of feedback if anyone has this, best places to try and get it from and advice on laminate Worktops in general, pro's and con' s against a stone Worktop. Also if I purchased this from elsewhere to my kitchen what happens re fitting/measuring/cutting etc?

Thanks

I suggest Duropal which was recommended to me by my fitter. My local John Lewis (Stratford) has a good selection on display as samples. You can also order free samples from Duropal's website. I have had mine for 8-9 months now and am very happy with it. This is a link to the one which I chose

My OH recently chose Duropal because it was a good match for Silestone. Of course at a fraction of the price of the Silestone - though it is a laminate and not a quartz!

I like the fact it has a drip groove - one of the few worktops to recognise this feature is essential in many kitchens.

The sample card was posted through within 48 hours. So full marks to Duropal.

I would suggest looking at samples at builders merchants, but this is your choice. Certainly I purchased through a local small builders merchant, which was probably cheaper than John Lewis.

I wasn't suggesting actually buying from JL, simply that they conveniently have them on display and also had a complete kitchen fitted with them so you can see the overall effect.

As well as the 'Durop' look at the 'Axiom' option:

I don't know where you are? But I visited the Llandaff Laminates showroom, saw the Axiom Diamonte sample - loved it so much ordered it to be fitted together with a Homebase kitchen.
Now, in another house didn't like the dull matt grey worktops in our kitchen, and with the opportunity of some changes with insurance work - replaced them all with Diamonte again - looks great.
There come in different sized lengths, so it's a question on measuring what you need, and working out how many lengths you want.
Also consider 'upstands' which fit at right-angles to the rear - sealed at the corner and against the wall.

This is a lovely mid-grey and would be very effective with white doors. Picture in attached link doesn't really show it, but it has different coloured sparkly bits in it. It's not textured though.

I found my local Jewsons had a good kitchen display area with a lot of laminate worktop samples, including this one.

Your kitchen fitter will be able to fit the worktop as well - I assume you won't be having it fitted by B&Q/Homebase etc.
  • Been busy bookmarking all ones I like, will phone up for samples. The diamant! and cinder one on the list. Need to see where my local stockists will be. Very difficult to get a good idea re how they look from 2in h swatches. Have been recommended a fitter, just waiting for quote, some other bits of work need doing as well.

We bought a lovely, slightly-textured, charcoal with white fleck Duropal Quadra profile laminate a few years ago. It looks a little like textured slate and the straight edge makes it look a up-to-date.

It has been fantastic and still looks as good as new. We're absolutely delighted with it.
