Voluntary severance, benefits and selling house

Hi
I wondered if anyone could advise as I seem to get conflicting info when I look on the web. I have applied for VS with the view that this is the best option with possible threats of further redundancies in the next year meaning that 'now'I get an enhanced payment and 'then' it would just be statutory.
My question is would I be able to claim benefits until I got some work or would they make me live off the redundancy? I am a single parent with one child.
I am hoping that my redundancy pay out will help me move back to my home town, pay for rent until I sell my current house. Could I then use the money from my house sale to buy a smaller property outright without that effecting benefits?
My redundancy pay out would last me less than a year if I rented and had to use it to live off.
Any advise appreciated :-)

this is what i have learnt from these forums...
you should in theory be entitled to contributions-based job seekers allowance, but you will need to be looking for a job whilst claiming. state only that you were made redundant (don't mention the voluntary bit, it only confuses matters).
if you have savings over 16k then you won't be entitled to anything else.0
