Egg Card PPI added to my account without my agreement!!

Hi everyone...I'm new to this site so hope I'm posting in the right place & hope someone can help!

I've just checked my Egg card (NOT Egg Money) as I've made a balance transfer & noticed that a PPI payment had been taken from my account. I have never agreed to having PPI as I'm self-employed so it's as much use as a chocolate fireguard to me.

I have called Egg & they have told me it was applied to my account in 2004 when I called them as I had overpaid, was in credit & wanted the credit to be paid back to my current account. They also said I had agreed to it being applied at that time according to the notes on their system.

I am adamant I did not, as it is no use to me...and why would I add payment protection to an account with a balance that was zero (or in credit)??!

Egg have now told me they will have to listen to the phone call from 3 years ago (!!!) in order to cancel the PPI & reimburse me the costs, if they find the PPI was applied to my account without my say so....

I wondered if anyone else had experience of this and how I should deal with it....I am furious with Egg as they have been applying these charges without me noticing for almost 3 years!!! Any suggestions would be most helpful!

Thanks :)

Perhaps they use invisible ink on their statements.

Hmmm...thanks for that helpful comment...I'm so glad sarcasm isn't dead and that you're so helpful towards a newbie!! :P

I admit I should have checked my statements more carefully but as the account has been cleared each month for most of the 3 years I didn't notice a few pounds here & there...It's only now when I transferred a balance & they slammed a £20 charge on the account that I saw it...

my question is...how can they sell me something that I haven't agreed to & how do I prove it when they are basing the sale on a phone call that I do not have a recording of??

    Helpful/constructive comments appreciated please!!

If you have not agreed to the PPI then ask them to supply you with a transcript of the call.
When they phoned me offering this 'completely free' for 3 months they were completely aghast that I turned their 'free' offer down. I told them I didn't want it and stuck to my guns. I have never been charged PPI.

Not sure what reaction you are going to get when you have had 36 statements to notice this though. Good luck.

I'm thinking of changing my sig to sarcy git - what do you think?

Call centre workers get commission on signing people up for PP and have daily targets. It has been known for some to do so without getting consent from the cardholder , especially when the cardholder rarely uses the card , so the PP charge wouldn't be noticed for some time. As others have asked , ask for a transcript of the call (which Egg won't have , as it was in 2004 ). The payment will be refunded , especially as you aren't eligible anyway.
  • thanks for all your comments/suggestions....I'm writing a letter today as they have not yet come back to me (I suspect they cannot find the transcript of the call)...I'll post an update once I hear back from them....I think they will be unable to prove that I agreed to it, especially if they do find the call....

:rotfl: maybe not a bad idea...still...at least you gave some useful advice after the initial sarcy moment!! :)
  • Hi there, sorry you're having same prob with egg as us of not having signed for ppi. in our case b/c self employed + pre exisitng health condition which means it's always worthless paying out on insurances. Having searched online we're not alone obviously They said I agreed online but I know I wouldn't have so asked them to send me proof but of course they say can't ...... so annoyed but kept my cool on phone - not sure how b/c operator was getting narked with me cross examining her on how she could prove I had taken out PPI when i know i haven't. She then said it's my fault for not noticing sooner but i said it didn't matter how long it was if it had been done without my consent - she didn't like that at all. Said they'd sent letter a month after I transferred balance but yet again no copy available to me yet I keep all my letters filed meticulously and i don't have on dated 28th Feb 2005!!!
Is it worth pursuing them about this - anyone got any advice on if I should just clear my balance and then proceed, or pay off what I calculate I owed and leave the remainder? :confuhttp://img.moneysavingexpert.com/smilies/confused-smiley-013.gifsed:  http://img.moneysavingexpert.com/smilies/angry-smiley-030.gif
