Long Weekend Staffordshire

Looking to go on a Friday to Monday weekend next month around Staffordshire. One of the days will be Alton Towers but we also wanted to have a day out shopping, walking, eating in nice places etc.
Where would be best? Can be up to an hours drive from Stafford and we will be travelling from South Wales so ideally south or west of Stafford.
Only place I have found so far is Chester through Google recommendations?!

Not sure Chester really fits the brief of "South or West of Stafford" !
How about Shrewsbury ? Quite a nice old town, would cover the shopping & the eating out requirement and then head out towards the Stiperstones area for the walking.0 -
How about Telford for shopping and Ironbridge gorge for a nice walk. Also a nice walk up the Wrekin also in this area. Travel time about 40/50 minutes each. Another nice place is Bridgenorth about 1 hour.0
