One of the accounts is fee free.

But it does not come with a... Oh. wait. So much for clear and simple.

Hmm. I thought the account did not come with a debit card - but the basic account which you have to pay a monthly fee for is the one that does not give you a debit card. The standard account is a standard account.

The fee-free account does come with a debit card. A perfectly good account for someone who doesn't care about interest on their current account, or any of the frilly bits like travel insurance and breakdown cover.

The basic account is just that - basic. If you want a less basic basic account, you have a choice - use one from another provider.

People who are lured in by the Post Office brand rather than any hard, actual reasons.
Perhaps they should leverage the brand. At least with the old National Girobank you could post stuff to Bootle without a stamp.

The accounts don't seem that appealing but from my perspective Barclays, CO-OP and HSBC are all foreign registered banks.

And from my perspective you're an alien from outer-space... Barclarys, HSBC and the Co-op are all UK banks registered in the UK.

The flexplus looks a better option for £2 a month more you get mobile phone cover, extra warranty on certain goods and a better breakdown service.

Have you checked whether you can do this already? Many banks allow it.

    There's a list here: http://www.postoffice.co.uk/branch-banking-services#withdrawals_&_deposits.

Quite a few changes since I last looked.

I usually use the Post Office when I can, to push a bit of extra business their way.

The Post Office not offering a monthly-fee-free current account. Ridiculous. So normal people are not expected to bank with them. Nice way to alienate your clientele.

This is the direction personal banking is heading.

Seems to come with a Maestro card? Are these even accepted anymore?

Well lets hope Maestro have improved their consumer protection since most of the major banks junked them....

    Only 2 chargeback rights...
