The EVOled downlighters on the site Janice mentioned are amazing (certainly not cheap, but with a 7 year warranty) I have just put for dimmable ones in a bedroom, really good. I even fitted one in my hallway that has a low energy GU10 and its far far better, search on YouTube for Halers EVOled :)
  • Just bought a 5 pack of Polished Chrome Fire Rated Downlights from the value range at SimplyDownlights .co.uk

IIRC if there is liveable space above then you need to fit fire rated lamps.

I don't think its really debatable, its common sense that if possible fire rated ones would be better than not and there is only a few quid in it last time I bought any. I get mine from Toolstation, good quality and about £7 each.

  • I think that the fire rated downlights are a better option (and usually cheaper!) than a standard downlight plus a fire hood, however, I read recently that a lot of people suffered fires in their lofts due to downlights but didn't notice until the ceiling collapsed as the smoke and fire was contained to the loft.

In that scenario the fire rated downlights being effective is a bit moot as the fire started above the fitting due to the downlight overheating or whatever but a friend recommended getting the iCage downlight fitting as these don't have dedicated heat lamps (his words, not mine!) to reduce the temperature so present less risk of it catching fire.

I bought mine locally but they have a website that sells the iCage downlights (Google Harrison Lighting iCage as it won't let me post links with being a noob) and they are relatively cheap for the quality of them :)

    Hope that helps.
  • Hi

Just purchased some fire rated downlights from a company called quickbit thought i better give them a mention on here because the service was brilliant and the prices were the most competitive i could find! Even if the lady on the phone spelt my name wrong on the invoice! :(
