Lloyds TSB charges.

Hi, I had a silver account with Lloyds about 4-5 years ago. When I lost my full time job my bills kept coming out at dates that didnt coincide with my payments and I kept going overdrawn. They then charged me per day, etc and they kept taking this payment when I was overdrawn and it was a vicious circle.
I therefore rang them and explained my circumstances and they cancelled the charges and downgraded my account to classic. (I didn't want the silver one in the first place!)
I don't get bank statements and I bank online. I rarely check my statements to be quite honest.
All this happened around 3-4 years ago.

That's the background story done lol.
Now this morning I had a letter telling me about what I was being charged for using my overdraft fees, so I took a look online to see how much I'd gone over, etc. I then noticed that every month I've been charged the £10 account fee. Tell me if I'm wrong but isn't the classic account free?
I rang up Lloyds and I'm told that a charge hasn't come out this month (yet!) but has come out in the last few months that she's checked...(I'm guessing they never stopped) and basically left it as that. Saying they must have stopped now because nothing has come out in May.
Am I entitled to that money back? Seeing as I shouldn't have been paying it in the first place?

If they can find a record of your request to downgrade, they should refund you the charges. Not noticing for over 3 years does not help your case however; how have you managed to bank online for all this time and not even notice the account fee?
  • You have nothing to lose by making a claim. Send them a recorded delivery letter stating all relevant dates and see what happens. Good luck!

Whatever happens, get into the habit of checking every item on your statement in future.

To be honest I never check money going in or out. I log on check my balance, pay my daughters preschool and back off.
I noticed before but with a very busy toddler and newborn I forget so easily. I am going to make a point of looking from now on though. Thank you all for your replies.
