Travel insurance for the long-term traveller

Hi all,
My partner and I have been out of the UK since last June, and have been living in China since August, with the exception of a short break back home in February this year. We're about to finish our contracts in China and will be backpacking around South-East Asia and China for the next few months before returning to the UK towards the end of the year to renew our passports and figure out what to do next...
Anyway, the point is we're finding it really hard to find sensibly-priced travel insurance for the next leg of our trip. We've been covered by our employer's insurance plan while we've been here, and prior to that were on cheap no-frills backpack insurance from a British-based online firm. Now we want something to cover us for the next six months though we are finding it impossible to get quotes of less than about 150-200gbp for very basic cover with 120gbp+ excess.
One of the big sticking points has been that we can't use a budget British provider as many of them have clauses ruling us out as we've not been resident in the UK for eg six of the last twelve months. Does anyone know of a good international provider for expats, backpackers etc that provides reasonably cheap cover and does not require us to have been resident in the UK recently? We weren't expecting to find it this difficult to find cover...
We're not too concerned about cover for our belongings by the way, we just want something to cover us in case of medical emergency etc for a sensible price.
Thanks!
